The baldric (sword belt) is another item that Jack spends a fair amount of time
without. Add it only if you just don't feel right without it.

MAKE YOUR OWN
Find a black or brown belt long enough to loop over your right shoulder and still have the other end reach to your mid-thigh. (Thrift stores are your friend...) An ornate buckle is a plus. With the buckle centered over your chest, cut the belt in half at its lowest point. Sew a loop (known as a "frog") into each end just big enough to accomodate the sheath for your cutlass. Cross the ends just over the loops and sew them together securely.
As for the cutlass sheath, get some black vinyl, leather or heavy cotton material. (Did we mention the thrift store?) Lay your cutlass on the material and trace around the blade. Turn it over and trace around the blade on the other side. Cut out the pieces, sew them together, and then, after making sure that your sword will indeed slide into your sheath, slide it through the rear loop of your baldric and attach it to the rear side of the forward loop. See this example.
If your sword has the slightest potential to hurt anyone, we strongly recommend
that you keep it from being drawn. Save a strip of fabric that's long enough
to loop through the cutlass handle and attach to either side of your sheath.
Sew it to the top of the sheath on one side and add a simple hook and loop (velcro)
closure to the other. Remember, there's always someone at the party who thinks
it would be funny to steal the pirate's cutlass and wave it around!
